VAT is an EU tax

The tax is only collected by the UK government on behalf of the EU.


The rate is set by the EU at a MINIMUM of 15%. That’s why at the start of the recession, the government could only decrease it from 17.5% to 15% - the EU wouldn’t let them lower it further.

If you want to fish off our coast you need permission from the EU

If you want to fish, have lobster pots or suchlike off our coastline, you need a licence from the EU & to buy a quota by paying a fee to the EU.

The local council is responsible for taking the application for a licence from the EU, paying the fee over to the EU & for enforcing the quota set by the EU.

The EU sell the right to fish in our waters to ships from places like Morroco
